STUDIES AND EXPERIMENTAL WORK ON ATOMIC COLLISION PROCESSES OCCURRING IN ATMOSPHERIC GASES.

Abstract

This final report contains a discussion of the experimental and analytical studies of electron attachment and detachment in pure O2, in O2-CO2 mixtures, and in O2-H2O mixtures. Measured values of attachment and detachment coefficients and equilibrium constants are tabulated. The results of improved measurements of thermal attachment coefficients and thermal electron mobilities are presented and used to obtain an improved value for the electron affinity for O2 of 0.43+0.02 ev. The present state of the studies of electron attachment and detachment in O2-O mixtures is discussed. The results of the studies of electron-molecular ion recombination in N2,O2, and O2, and NO which have been carried out under this contract are given along with a summary of our previous measurements. The results of a determination of momentum transfer and inelastic collision cross sections for electrons in N2 are summarized. Preliminary results of a determination of electron scattering cross sections in O2 are given and are used to discuss the behavior of electrons in air. (Author)
