DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF HIGH-FIELD COMPRESSION AND TRANSFER COIL SYSTEMS FOR A MAGNETIC MIRROR MACHINE.

Abstract

A magnetic-mirror system has been designed and built to provide experimental means for adiabatic heating of low-density plasmoids. The entire system consists of four sets of singlelayer transfer coils properly arranged to achieve preheating and transport between the source and final compression area of the plasmoids and a high-field mirror coil set to provide for final compression and thereby adiabatic heating of plasma. The high-field compression coil is of Bitter-type construction and capable of producing approximately 100 kilogauss center field when the source capacitors are charged up to 17 kv. The mirror-to-center-field ratio of the high-field coil is approximately 1.5. The performance tests showed close correspondence between calculated and measured parameters of the coil. (Author)
