INVESTIGATION OF BONDING IN OXIDE-FIBER (WHISKER) REINFORCED METALS.

Abstract

The effect of specific trace elements on the bonding of nickel to single crystal sapphire was investigated. Sessile drop experiments were conducted in vacuo at 1485 C = 10 C. In previous experiments, the addition of about 10,000 ppm Zr, Ti, and Cr to nickel was found to have distinct, but different effects, on the interfacial microstructure and the room-temperature bond strength between Ni and Al2O3. The present studies have been concerned with the same additives, but at much lower concentrations, viz., of the order of 800 ppm and -20 ppm. Even at these low concentrations, the same types of interfacial microstructures and fracture modes, which were characteristic for the specimens containing 10,000 ppm Cr, Ti, and Zr, were observed.
