INSTALLATION AND TEST OF THE TCE1-FRG EXPEDITIONARY CATAPULT AT THE NAVAL AIR TEST FACILITY (SI).

Abstract

The catapult was designed to launch F-104G aircraft for the Federal Republic of Germany's Short Airfield for Tactical Support (SATS). A suitable test site was built and the catapult was installed and tested. One hundred launchings were performed to develop and demonstrate aircraft/catapult compatibility, determine catapult performance, and evaluate catapult component reliability. Five aircraft gross-weight conditions between 18,500 and 28,000 pounds were tested. Thirty-four of the launchings were at end speeds greater than 200 knots. All launchings were made with the aircraft at combat rated thrust. The TCE1-FRG catapult, with some necessary modifications, was found to be capable of successfully launching all gross weights of the F-104G aircraft under the ambient conditions experienced during the test program (sea level and from 22 to 61 F).
