HIGH ENERGY CRYSTALLINE LASER MATERIALS.

Abstract

The object of this research is to obtain improved laser materials for high energy lasers. During the third quarter of this contract, the study of energy transfer from Cr to Nd in GdAlO3 and YAlG continued. In order to study the Nd fluorescence arising via transfer from Cr, the material was excited by a flash lamp in just the Cr absorption bands where Nd does not absorb. Data on GdAlO3 showed that fast transfer processes were most important and suggested that there must be a Cr-Cr interaction. The fast transfer in YAlG at .08% Cr and 0.65% Nd (mole %), is slower than in GdAlO3 and a rise of fluorescence after the flash pulse was observed, peaking at about 50 microsec. Another significant result of the double-doping studies is that the fluorescence efficiency of the Nd fluorescence appears to improve when Cr is present. As much as a factor of two increase in the Nd fluorescence was observed pumping GdAlO3 where just Nd absorbs for the samples containing 0.5% Cr compared to those containing no Cr. (Author)
