EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH TO DETERMINE THE FEASIBILITY OF A COLLOID THRUSTOR.

Abstract

The experimental research to determine the feasibility of a heavy particle colloid thrustor is described. In order to extend the state of the art the following goals were set: Beam current 100 microamperes, Peak charge/mass - 200 coulombs/kilogram, Efficiency - 75%, Lifetime of 100 microampere array - 100 hours, Life with acceleration of 100 kv - 4 hours, and Field strength - 20 kilovolts per cm. A beam current of 250 microamperes peaked at 2000 coulombs/kilogram with an efficiency in excess of 75% during a life test of 100 hours, permitted meeting and/or surpassing the first four goals. The fifth goal was not obtained although a number of runs in excess of 1-1/2 hours were made. The last goal was surpassed. (Author)
