COMPONENT EVALUATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE TC13 STEAM CATAPULT.

Abstract

This report primarily covers the development testing of a constant-receiver-pressure launching system and a rotary retraction engine. The rotary engine tests were suspended prematurely because it was severely damaged when a launching was made with the grab attached. Testing completed prior to the accident indicated that the major problem area was excessive hydraulic pressure during retract braking. The constantreceiver-pressure tests included: (1) A deadload calibration, (2) A study of the effects of varying hydraulic pressure, (3) A study of the effect of launching-valve tolerances, (4) Asimulation of sealing-strip failure, and (5) Suitability tests of a hydraulic fluid strainer.
