SOME MEASUREMENTS AT X-BAND OF THE ATTENUATION CONSTANTS OF CYLINDRICAL WIRE SURFACE-WAVEGUIDES.

Abstract

This paper describes measurements, made over a wide frequency range in X-band, of the attenuation constants of cylindrical wire surface-waveguides consisting of commercially available samples of copper and aluminium alloy wires of various diameters and with various surface treatments. The measured attenuation constants are higher than the corresponding values obtained using Goubau's analysis by as much as 100% in the case of the copper wires and by as much as 30% in the case of the aluminum alloy wires and reasons for this are discussed. The losses on this form of transmission line can be made lower than would be obtained with a conventional form of transmission line by suitable choice of wire diameter and it is concluded that the wire surface-waveguide could be used with advantage in applications where the guide is not required to make abrupt changes of direction.
