SIMMER-CONTROL OF LARGE LAMPS.

Abstract

A method of reducing the effects of coldfilament surge current and load transients on a power supply, when a high-wattage lamp is switched on, is to simmer the lamp during the OFF, or eclipse portion of its flashing sequence. In this approach, a lower voltage is applied to the lamp during the eclipse, so that the lamp is not switched off completely and the filament does not cool to ambient temperature. Thus, the thermal shock to the filament is reduced when full voltage is again applied for the next flash portion of the flashing sequence, and the filament resistance is nearer the operating level to reduce the current surge. The ASCO Static Load Simmer Control was evaluated for use in controlling large-wattage lamps used as flashing aids to maritime navigation. The device appeared to be quite effective for such use, on the basis of laboratory testing, and appeared to offer distinct advantages over other methods of simmer control. (Author)
