LABORATORY TESTS OF 1000-WATT QUARTZ-IODINE INCANDESCENT LAMPS.

Abstract

A 120-volt, 1000-watt quartz-iodine incandescent filament lamp was evaluated in the laboratory for use as a light source in aids to maritime navigation. Tests were conducted to measure the operating characteristics of this developmental lamp, its life, lumen maintenance, performance in several navaid optical systems, effect of simmering, and effect of flashed operation. The Q-I lamp was found to be superior to any large-wattage incandescent filament lamp presently approved for navaid use, in life and lumen maintenance. Flashing does not adversely affect the performance of the Q-I lamp if a daily two-minute 'purge' at full voltage is applied. Further testing will be required to determine if this 'purge' is actually necessary. (Author)
