UNIFORMISATION OF A QUASI-LINEAR HYPERBOLIC EQUATION, PART I, THE FORMAL SOLUTION.

Abstract

The Cauchy and characteristic boundary value problems for a typical system (Section 3) of homogeneous differential equations in two independent and two dependent variables are studied and a generalised 'formal' solution is established which (1) exists on the maximal domain of uniqueness and (2) is identical with the classical solution where that exists uniquely. The formal solution removes the obstacle which the limitations of the classical existence theorem puts in the way of a study of the solution structure. It is hoped that the understanding thus opened up will advance the study of the solutions of n conservation laws for n greater than 1. (Author)
