THERMOCHEMISTRY OF SELECTED COMPOUNDS

Abstract

Hydrolysis of Al(BH4)3 with the vapors of water and HCl was investigated independently. In the latter case, the generated heat data were quite consistent. Analytical determinations of B and evolved H2 continued to be low by an amount ranging from 10 to 20% of theoretical. An Al analysis was found to be greater than 100% of theoretical and is in line with earlier findings. It was found that the presence of HCl in the bomb reacted to a slight degree with the bomb producing Ni ions which yielded a high 'Al' analysis. In the reaction of Al(BH4)3 with water vapor, the B analyses have begun to appear to be much closer to the 100% of the theoretical value. Samples of SAP were prepared in a nitrogen drybox and allowed to react with water. Nine determinations of the heat of hydrolysis of the SAP material were made. The results gave -54.4 + or - 1.4 kilocalories per mole.
