GEOMETRIC INSTABILITIES IN ISOTROPIC RIGID-PLASTIC SOLIDS UNDER INCREASING UNIAXIAL COMPRESSION.

Abstract

Instabilities in an isotropic, strain-hardening rigid-plastic cylinder are investigated by imposition of small three-dimensional perturbations. The Mises yield criterion implies very stringent restrictions on possible perturbational displacement fields, and even Shanley buckling according to the tangent modulus formula is not admissible. The principal aim of this research is to investigate the greater freedom allowed by a singular yield surface. Three types of instability possible in a generalized Tresca material-- axisymmetric, deflectional and higher order -- are examined in detail. (Author)
