IMAGE FORMATION IN OPTICAL SYSTEMS THAT UTILIZE AMPLITUDE AND PHASE MASKS N THE FOURIER IMAGE PLANE.

Abstract

The Foucault knife edge test, the schlieren system, the phase contrast method, and the concepts of spatial filtering and theta modulation are all characterized by the same mathematical expressions. These concepts are all treated here as a group and are termed Fourier Mask Optics where the word mask includes phase masks as well as the usual sense, i.e., amplitude masks. A general mathematical procedure is derived from basic principles and the manner in which the aforementioned concepts fit into this mathematical framwork is shown by way of a simple example of each case. Several illustrations of interesting subjects are also shown, with emphasis on the schlieren system and the special case of isochromates. (Author)
