THE THERMAL DECOMPOSITION OF 3,5-DIPHENYL-1,2,4- OXADIAZOLE AND 2,5-DIPHENY-1,3,4- OXADIAZOLE.

Abstract

Proposed mechanisms for the thermal decomposition of 3,5-diphynyl- 1,2,4-oxadiazole and 2,5-diphynyl- 1,3,4-oxadiazole two high temperature resistant polymer precursors, imply that the molar product ratio of benzonitrile to phenyl isocyanate be 1: 1 in each case. The observed ratios although close to unity lie above this figure; this is rationalized on the basis of a concomitant reaction of phynyl isocyanate to give diphenylcarbodiimide and carbon dioxide.
