Plant Colloids for Evaluation as Plasma Extenders and for Complexing with Protein Sparing Substances.

Abstract

Studies of 2-hydroxpropyl pectate were primarily concerned with possible problems of its preparation on a pilot plant scale. Modifications were investigated which would permit the laboratory esterification procedure, as employed in the pressure bottle work, to be applied on a larger scale. In an attempt to find a more practical and economical route of preparing 2-hydroxypropyl pectate, studies were conducted on esterification in a heterogenous system. It appeared of interest to study the in vivo behavior of a 2-hydroxypropyl pectate of slightly lower molecular weight either as such or after cross-linking with formaldehyde or glyoxal. Experiments were thus directed to prepare such lower molecular weight esters and an attempt was made to cross-link this material with glyoxal. (Author)
