PLANT COLLOIDS FOR EVALUATION AS PLASMA EXTENDERS AND FOR COMPLEXING WITH PROTEIN SPARING SUBSTANCES.

Abstract

The major part of this report period was devoted to the preparation of glycerol pectate for testing at Camp Lejeune. Studies were continued towards improving the stability of this material, and an attempt was made to prepare a stable product by spray drying. As a part of the testing program on glycerol pectate, solutions of 3 and 3 1/2% were prepared to study their oncotic pressures in comparison with the usual 4% level. It is shown that the lower concentrations gave considerably less oncotic pressure which in the case of the 3% level was far below that of human plasma. The testing of solutions lower than the 4% level will therefore not be carried out. (Author)
