DIRECT AND INDIRECT ELECTRON CONTROL BY PHOTOCONDUCTIVE ELEMENTS.

Abstract

The use of photoconductors as control mechanisms for electron space currents in image intensifier tubes is discussed. The various approaches to controlling electrons in a vacuum are detailed and a mathematical investigation of each type is given. A figure of merit that is necessary for intensifier tubes of the types described is developed. Means of contract gain enhancement are discussed. The thermalization of hot electrons in thin metal films is extensively discussed as a way of energy filtering for special kinds of transmission grids useful in intensifiers. A new transport equation for epithermal electrons in metals is developed. (Author)
