RESEARCH IN HIGH TEMPERATURE PLASMA.

Abstract

Fabrication was begun on the diagnostic equipment to be used during the first AMC experiments. An electrolytic tray was constructed to study systems using electrostatic shielding. Ion source research has resulted in continuous operation at 250 ma. Electron oscillating volumes were encountered during operation of the 600-kev accelerator. Magnetic shielding and electron dumps are being installed to eliminate these parasitic electron oscillations. Studies of particle motion and plasma stability continue. Experiments with multimomentum particles have furnished data on primary beam yield, particle distribution and neutral particle yield. Of interest is the yield of excited diatomic ions produced from dissociation of multimomentum triatomic ions. An experiment is being conducted using a high energy proton beam that is passed transversely through a pyrolytic carbon arc. The data shows up to 10% of 200-kev proton is ionized in passage through the arc. (Author)
