A SYSTEM OF KEYS FOR THE INTERPRETATION OF VEGETATION FROM AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA.

Abstract

Many kinds of trees and other plants and many kinds of vegetation can be recognized on aerial photographs of the Chesapeake area and by inference in other areas. Such photo-recognition can be materially assisted and expedited by systematic analytical keys specially prepared for this area and included in this report. By inference, such keys should be of similar assistance when similarly prepared for other areas. When some of the plants and some of the vegetation are recognized on aerial photography of this area, much can be deduced as to the environmental factors by making use of the fact that every plant indicates at least some of these factors and that the sum total of indications of all the plants and vegetation recognized furnishes considerable information of military, and industrial, value as to this area. Presumably the same photo-interpretation can be done for other areas and can likewise be facilitated by keys specially made for such areas. (Author)
