GASEOUS ION LASER RESEARCH.

Abstract

The interrelationship of fundamental parameters determining laser power output and efficiency is reviewed, and preliminary experimental results are summarized. Radiation trapping in ion lasers is outlined briefly and is shown to have a complicated dependence on the parameters which affect laser efficiency and power output. The results of mode studies of cw and pulsed lasers using a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer are described. An appendix is included which discusses in detail the performance factors and mode coupling techniques for the scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer. Preliminary results of a new type of laser configuration, the ring discharge, are described. (Author)
