ANALYTICAL PROCEDURES FOR PREDICTING THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF FIBER REINFORCED COMPOSITES.

Abstract

The basic problem is to determine the elastic moduli for fiber reinforced plastic material if the elastic moduli of the constituents are known. Two geometries are investigated in this report. The first is a regular hexagonal array of uniform circular fibers. The second is a tape with a single row of circular fibers. Computer programs are obtained which compute the composite elastic moduli and also the micro stress in terms of macro strains at the boundary between fiber and resin. Thhe procedure is to write solutions of the equations of elasticity which are valid in the fiber and resin elements, and which are appropriately periodic. The coefficients in the solution are determined by satisfying the boundary conditions by the method of least squares or by a combination of the Fourier Method with the Method of Lease Squares.
