CONFERENCE ON OPTICS IN SPACE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON 27-29 SEPTEMBER 1965,

Abstract

On 24 March 1964 the European Space Research Organization (ESRO) was activated. With Headquarters in Paris but decentralized to a considerable degree, ESRO was to be a cooperative endeavour of ten European nations who were anxious to participate in an effort distinctly separate from that of the Americans or the Russians. The initial plans for the first eight years of operation included the launching of 400 sounding rockets, six small satellites, eight medium size satellites, seven space probes, and one large orbiting astronomical observatory. Not encompassed within this program is the actual development of sounding rockets and launching vehicles. Thirty-seven papers were presented, and they covered the gamut from radiation damage in interference filters to moon-based survey parties. Throughout the conference ran the underlying theme of planning for the large orbiting astronomical satellite eventually to be launched by ESRO. (Author)
