THALLIUM BEAM TUBE RESEARCH.
Abstract
The goal of this contract is the construction of a laboratory model thallium beam tube for frequency control and timekeeping applications. It has been found possible to make an efficient, continuously operating oxidized tungsten ionizer that operates at a temperature where the dwell time of thallium on the ionizer surface is short enought to permit reasonable modulation frequencies. A low background pressure of oxygen is sufficient to keep the ionizer ribbon oxidized at these temperatures. A quadrupole state selector magnet was tested. (Author)
