INVESTIGATION OF CHAFF COMMUNICATIONS AT 4,650 MCPS.
Abstract
The purpose of this program is to investigate the use of chaff as a scattering mechanism for communications between sites for which line-of-sight conditions do not exist. A chaff communication system and associated data reduction and processing equipment were fabricated. The system included a receiver terminal and transmitter terminal. Both terminals were installed in vans. The system was designed for one way transmission and dual diversity reception. Automatic tracking of the chaff cloud was used at the receiver. An error analyzer was fabricated which determined bit errors and provided outputs for error and interval distributions. Chaff was dispensed from an aircraft. Measured values of average signal strength were 7 to 15 db below calculated values. The lower measured values appear to have been due to large chaff clouds. Evidence was obtained which indicated that the received signal is sensitive to antenna pointing angles. A 600 k bits per second was transmitted during these tests. Median error rates from 0.025 to 39 percent were obtained for this bit rate and no diversity. (Author)
