ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY AND STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOR OF UNDERCOOLED GALLIUM AND GALLIUM-INDIUM EUTECTIC ALLOY.

Abstract

Electrical resistivity measurements of undercooled gallium and undercooled gallium-indium eutectic alloy have been made to examine structural changes in undercooled melts. Continuous linear extension of the resistivity has been determined for 99.999% pure gallium when it is undercooled below the stable Ga I-liquid, and the metastable Ga II-liquid equilibria. Upon undercooling the eutectic alloy of gallium-indium, a significant continuous negative departure from linear resistivity behavior has been measured. All resistivity measurements were made using the four point probe technique. These results are discussed in relation to theories of atomic aggregation inferred from viscosity and nucleation phenomena. (Author)
