EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATION OF THE TRANSPORT PROPERTIES OF GASES.
Abstract
Methods of experimentally determining the transport properties of high temperature gases are discussed. A constant area helium driven shock tube is used as the high temperature gas source. The two methods presently under investigation are heat transfer and ultrasonic. Heat transfer rate measurements have been obtained in argon, nitrogen, and oxygen for temperatures up to 8000 K. Preliminary thermal conductivity data are presented for oxygen for temperatures up to 4000 K. The ultrasonic method has been used in determining temperatures of shock heated argon (up to 9000 K) and nitrogen (up to 3000 K). The extension of the ultrasonic method in determining transport properties of gases at elevated temperatures is indicated. (Author)
