DEVELOPMENT OF A WHISTLE LIGHT FOR SHIPS.

Abstract

A navigational light and control set, which operates in conjunction with the ship whistle was developed and tested. The white whistle light provides 32-point visibility and a 5-mile range. It operates simultaneously with the ship whistle and can be operated with either manual or solenoid-actuated whistle valves. The whistle light can be distinguished from other lights in the array at 13.5 miles with a 100/100-watt lamp spaced 12 feet above the range light under atmospheric transmission conditions of 70 percent per nautical mile. The whistle light operated satisfactorily throughout a 5-month test period on board an MSO and meets all the requirements established by the Bureau of Ships. (Author)
