NITROGEN-COOLED LOW-NOISE PARAMETRIC AMPLIFIER USING INDIUM ANTIMONIDE VARACTORS.

Abstract

This report describes the research activity on InSb varactors and the development of a cryogenically cooled, low noise, broadband parametric amplifier at X-band. Detailed measurements and evaluation of InSb and GaAs varactors have been made to determine their relative merits. Due to an anomalous current effect observed in InSb varactors, the final amplifier was delivered with a GaAs varactor. The amplifier had a noise temperature of 70 K, at 500 Mc bandwidth, and a mean gain of 16 db, when cooled to 77 K. (Author)
