FAST-RISE RADAR-REFLECTIVE BALLOON.

Abstract

The object is to design and develop a fast-rise radar-reflective balloon capable of ascending to 100,000 feet during the day and night at 1,700 feet per minute, to supply 50 sample type, 68 preliminary type, and 65 final type balloons. Both day and night flights have been made with fast-rise balloon vehicles. Basically, the vehicle consisted of a high-altitude balloon inside a low-altitude balloon which had a tail attached to it. Four of the six daytime flights reached an altitude of at least 116,900 feet, at not less than 1,894 feet per minute. The night flights did not meet the flight specifications. Three flights were conducted with Suchy tetrahedral corner radar reflectors inside the tail sections. (Author)
