COHERENT OPTICAL PARAMETRIC TECHNIQUES.

Abstract

Optical parametric amplification has been observed in ADP crystals. The possibility of parametric amplification at optical frequencies was examined theoretically from the viewpoint of pump power requirements and the properties of the nonlinear birefringent crystals; the broadband nature and excellent noise characteristics of parametric devices were also discussed. Experimentally, a suitable combination of pump and sitnal frequencies was chosen, and parametric gain was observed at the signal frequency. Techniques have been developed to minimize the insertion losses, and consideration has been directed toward minimizing the pump power requirements. In addition, the linearity, bandwidth, noise characteristics, and stability of the amplifier have also been studied and characterized. The program proposed for further studies includes continued effort in three wave parametric amplification so as to achieve higher gain, as well as study of optical parametric up-conversion and two-pump parametric amplification.
