MULTIZONE STRUCTURE OF THE HYDRATION ATMOSPHERES OF IONS.

Abstract

Alkali metal cations in aqueous solutions are surrounded by hydration atmospheres consisting of concentric zones of 1) dense, strongly bound electrostricted water 2) a Frank-Wen cluster of less dense, bound water, and 3) cluster-impoverished or structure-broken water. Estimates of the number of water molecules in the first two zones of Na at 5, 20 and 50 C., based on the concentration dependence of the Arrhenius activation energy of viscous flow, yield values in good agreement with the Nemethy-Scheraga estimates of the average number of water molecules in a Frank-Wen cluster in pure water at the same temperature.
