A STUDY OF THE PHYSICAL BASIS OF THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF CERAMICS.

Abstract

A study of the physical basis for the mechanical properties of ceramics is presented. A crack propagation mechanism is proposed for alkali halides along with experimental data to support the mechanism. Methods of measuring the strength of ceramic materials have been studied and a cleavage method has been developed which gives data reproducible to 5 per cent. An investigation of the optical mechanical properties of germanium indicates the experimental difficulty of such a study. (Author)
