INVESTIGATION OF STRAIN DISTRIBUTION AROUND FATIGUE CRACKS IN ALUMINUM SHEETS.

Abstract

A survey of developments in the field of crack propagation and an experimental investigation of the strain distribution around fatigue crack in flat aluminum sheets was conducted. Crack propagation was produced by constant stress reverse bending. Crack propagation rates were determined for both central and edge cracks. The nature of the geometry in the thickness direction around the crack tip was described and analyzed with the aid of Newton's Interference Fringes. A possible adaption of the method with the birefringent coating technique is suggested for further study. (Author)
