DEVELOPMENT OF FIBERGLASS SEGMENTED ROCKET MOTORCASE.

Abstract

A program directed toward design, development, fabrication, and testing of light-weight motorcase segments, culminating in a design applicable to large (160- to 240-in.-diameter) segmented solid propellant rocket motors, is described. Basic motorcase segment and joint concepts, and the design, fabrication, and testing of 43-in.-diameter subscale segments used to evaluate the design are discussed. Analytical techniques and a program conducted to implement design and test procedures for the 43-in.-diameter segments are described. A novel adhesive lap joint design using a multiadhesive variable rigidity bondline was used in fabrication of the last segment tested. Three 43-in.-diameter subscale motorcase segments, complete with associated joint hardware, were tested to failure. All segments failed below proof test requirements. (Author)
