CONCEALED MUNITIONS DETECTOR RESEARCH.

Abstract

This report details the approximate theoretical analyses of the various factors influencing the detection range capability of a metal detector utilizing the magnetic induction principle with one primary coil and one detection coil. Consideration is given to the various sources of undesired signals contributing to the degradation of the detection range. These include Johnson noise, atmospheric noise, signals due to the ground conductivity, the ground permeability, spurious target, and due to direct coupling between the primary and the detection coils. With a single detector coil, the range is severely limited by the ground signal, even with automatic cancellation of one quadrature component and fixed cancellation of the other. The optimized distribution of weight between the various components, the coil size, the wire size and the structure size are determined for an intrinsic noise limited device and the resulting design is proposed. A unique supporting structure has been devised, constructed, and tests are under way. (Author)
