MILLIMETER WAVELENGTH POWER GENERATION UTILIZING THE PHREATRON EFFECT.

Abstract

The purpose of this contract is to develop a C. W. millimeter wavelength generator utilizing a very high voltage electron beam interacting with Cerenkov and other types of fast wave couplers. The particular electron beam configuration to be exploited, and with which we associate the name Phreatron effect, is one that makes possible efficient use of very high voltage beams together with low interaction impedance couplers such as the Cerenkov coupler. A version of this type of generator has been operated at a wavelength of 1.25 cm with results indicating feasibility for millimeter wave generation. The objective of the program is to extend this approach to 3 mm wavelengths and eventually to 1 mm waves. (Author)
