A FEASIBILITY STUDY OF AN ESCAPE CAPSULE SYSTEM FOR HIGH-SPEED AIRCRAFT.

Abstract

Wind tunnel tests and theoretical studies were conducted to determine the feasibility of using the crew compartment of a typical airplane as an escape capsule. The stability characteristics of the separated capsule and the airplane with capsule removed were determined. In order to have a safe separation, the capsule must be forcibly ejected away from the airplane and have a stabilizing device deployed. (Author)
