ELASTIC CONSTANTS OF SMALL SINTERED CERAMIC SPECIMENS.

Abstract

This study is connected with the methods of measuring the sound velocity or elastic constants of small samples. Several techniques are considered. The sample size is less than 1/2 x 1/2 x 1/2 inch. Methods of measuring the elasticity of thin films are considered. Methods of estimating the elastic constants from experiments performed on powder are discussed. Detailed discussions and conclusions are made for: (1) ultrasonic propagation of sound; (2) infrared reflection; (3) resonance of bars; (4) resonance of small spheres; (5) high-pressure compression and low-temperature calorimetry; (6) the static determination of Poisson's ratio.
