METHODS OF LABORATORY AND FIELD MEASUREMENTS OF THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF SOILS.
Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate experimental methods of measurement of thermal conductivity and diffusivity of soils, building construction and insulation materials under laboratory and field conditions. The applicability, cost, accuracy, and limitations of these techniques are assessed. After a brief review of methods of measurement of thermal conductivity and diffusivity, the probe method is discussed in greater detail, because it appears to be the most promising technique. Factors such as moisture migration, instrumentation requirements, methods of probe emplacement, and experimental technique used in probe measurements are considered. (Author)
