ANALYTIC SOLUTION FOR FLUID STRATIFICATION IN A GYROSCOPE.

Abstract

The possible error induced by thermogravitational diffusion in a binary flotation fluid of a floated gyroscope is considered. An analytic expression is derived to give the species separation occurring in a narrow spherical, or cylindrical, gap when there is a uniform temperature change across the gap in the presence of a gravity field. This solution is used to estimate the possible drift rate produced by this mechanism in a gyro. The result is expressed as a function of time, geometry, and the fluid properties of the flotation mixture. The predicted drift rates are of the order of 0.1 deg/hr and appear to be consistent with drift rates experienced in the laboratory. (Author)
