GREAT CIRCLEDOM REVISITED: A SIMPLE, ACCURATE METHOD FOR DETERMINING GREAT CIRCLE DISTANCES AND ROUTES ON POLAR STEREOGRAPHIC PROJECTIONS,

Abstract

Polar stereographic projections are maps extensively used by operation planners and analyst who often resort to unnecessarily complex and time-consuming methods for determining great circle distances and routes thereon. A simple, accurate method for these determinations, well known to cartographers but apparently less familiar to planners and analysts, has proved to be of considerable utility in operation planning and research at The Rand Corporation. The method and attendant useful graphs and overlays are presented in this memorandum in the hope that other organizations will find them similarly useful. (Author)
