DEVELOPMENT OF A 50 KVA LABORATORY PROTOTYPE SUPERCONDUCTING AC GENERATOR.

Abstract

The objective of this program is the completion of the superconducting generator investigations culminating with the fabrication and evaluation of a 50 kva laboratory model to verify the generator performance potential predicted by such investigations. The design and fabrication effort of the laboratory model superconducting generator is divided into three major areas. First, an electrical phase which provides for the field and armature components from an electrical viewpoint. Second, a heat transfer phase which provides for the removal of heat generated by the loss mechanisms of the generator. Third, a facilities phase which provides and maintains the environment package required by the superconductors. Also, the drive system and test facility for the generator is provided. The detailed design is substantially complete. The output waveshape of the armature winding had been investigated experimentally to support the design study. An analytical study of the heat transfer in the generator armature had been conducted, and an experimental investigation of the thermal properties of armature frame materials has been continued.
