NEGATIVE-GRID TUBES FOR PHASED ARRAYS.
Abstract
The objective of the program was to produce a triode or tetrode capable of providing a cw output of 1000 watts at 50% efficiency at 1300 Mc/sec. This objective was achieved and exceeded by use of the L-65 triode. This small tube, which is only 1 inch in diameter by 1 1/4 inches long, has operated at 1 kw output with an efficiency of 67% and a power gain of 13 db at 1300 Mc. In line with another goal of the contract, the tube operated with low heater power by virtue of the use of a heater that is bonded directly to the back of the cathode. A further objective of major importance was to obtain 5 kw of peak output in a 10% bandwidth circuit from a tube operating as a pulsed amplifier at a duty cycle of 0.07 with 500 microseconds pulses. This objective was achieved by use of the L-64 triode, a tube that is slightly larger than the L-65, but is similar in all other respects. (Author)
