PROCESSING OF DATA FROM SONAR SYSTEMS. VOLUME 3

Abstract

This report is concerned with problems in passive sonar detection which arise when signal or noise properties deviate significantly from the simplest possible model (a target acting as a point source of broadband Gaussian signal in a background of isotropic Gaussian noise). Problems investigated were concerned with improvements in detectability obtained from a knowledge of the special features of signal or noise and with degradation in detector performance as a result of an inadequate knowledge of signal or noise statistics or a deliberate exclusion of some available information so as to simplify the instrumentation.
