Mathematics in Northern and Southern Ireland

Abstract

This report, which deals with the current state of mathematical activities in Northern Ireland (Ulster) and Southern Ireland (Eire), is based on visits which the author has made to most of Ireland's universities and to the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. In addition to brief discussions of some of the research problems currently under investigation, the report contains some commentary on the political and social problems which, in the author's opinion, have a considerable effect on education and scholarship in Eire.
