COMPARISONS OF WEIGHTS AND PERFORMANCE OF SOLAR DYNAMIC ENERGY CONVERSION SYSTEMS.

Abstract

The Advanced Solar Turbo-Electric Concept (ASTEC) program, being conducted to develop a power system for use in space, converts solar radiation to useful electrical power by means of a dynamic conversion system. Prior to the initiation of the definition study, a review of possible applications for solar space power systems indicated that, for maximum usage, the system should be available by 1968. The establishment of this early target date restricted the scope of the study and demanded that any proposed cycle be evaluated with respect to both development risk and performance. The cycles considered were the Rankine cycle using mercury, water, or biphenyl as the working fluid and the Brayton cycle using argon as a working fluid. Detailed engineering analyses were undertaken to assess the performance and inherent problems of the selected cycles. The primary purposes of the analyses were to gain an insight into the fundamental relationships which govern the performance of the unit and to define a unit exhibiting a minimum weight and projected area. The analytical approach consisted of the development of detailed mathematical models describing each of the components of the system. The mathematical model was used to develop a computer program if the model size was restrictive, the ccomputation time large, or if any iterative or repetitive solution was required. As a result of the above constraints, thirty computer programs were written; the programs were inter-related through overall system requirements and a system optimization of coupling computer program. The weights, areas, and development risks of four candidate systems were compared. The Rankine-water system is recommended for further development. (Author)
