DESIGN DATA FOR MATERIAL EMPLOYED IN THERMAL PROTECTIVE SYSTEMS ON ADVANCED AEROSPACE VEHICLES.

Abstract

This investigation was undertaken to provide design data on materials required for the efficient design of thermal protective systems of the radiation and transpiration cooled type. The reports covering various aspects of this study are presented in three volumes. In this report, which represents Volume III entitled, 'Design Data for Materials Employed in Thermal Protective Systems on Advanced Aerospace Vehicles', emphasis was placed on developing a suitable analytical technique for assessing the merits of refractory materials for radiation cooled thermal protective systems. The work on transpiration cooling, and material property evaluation was continued. Finally, preliminary results are presented which indicate that proof testing graphite significantly increases the allowable design stress associated with low probabilities of failure. (Author)
