ENGINEERING TEST (SAFETY RELEASE) OF AERIAL SMOKE MARKER AND SMOKE MARKER DISPENSER, SMD-1.

Abstract

An engineering test (for safety release only) was conducted on the white aerial smoke marker and smoke marker dispenser, SMD-1, at Aberdeen Proving Ground from 30 September to 3 December 1965. The system was found to be structurally safe and compatible with the 0-1A and UH-1B aircraft. It was possible that a marker could be ignited and hung in the dispenser from the effects of small arms fire; however, the marker burning inside the dispenser, did not constitute a significant hazard to the aircraft. It was recommended that the system be considered safe for use on both types of aircraft. (Author)
