GUNFIRE-SHATTER AND DROP TESTS ON ALUMINUM SCUBA BOTTLES.

Abstract

Gunfire-shatter tests and drop tests were conducted on three types of aluminum SCUBA bottles to determine their reaction to abrupt penetration by a projectile and to dropping onto a hard surface. U. S. Divers bottles, Mk 5 bottles, and Northill bottles were subjected to various tests using a Browning .50-caliber machine gun with armor-piercing ammunition. Northill bottles were subjected to 35-foot drops onto a mild steel impact plate. Fastax and Bell and Howell movie cameras were used to record results. Several Northill bottles ruptured and several fragmentized during the gunfire-shatter tests; no Mk 5 or U. S. Divers bottles sustained damage to this extent. In all drop tests except one, the Northill bottles were damaged enough to cause loss of pressure. (Author)
